BRIEF HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN VIEW BAPTIST CHURCH
In the early part of 1947, Rev. John J. Cox began conducting cottage prayer meetings in various homes in the Jeff Davis Road, White Road and Burkett Road areas of Thomaston. Eventually, Mr. and Mrs. William Kennedy allowed the services to be held in a vacant house on their property on Jeff Davis Road.
On December 7, 1947, fourteen people came together to organize the church itself. Rev. John J. Cox was elected as the Pastor of the new church with Mr. Tom Burkett and Mr. Jim Burkett chosen as the first Deacons. Miss Martha Cox was chosen as the church clerk and Mr. Jess
Burkett was elected treasurer. The name chosen for the new church was Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church, partly due to the scenic view of the mountain which frames the church. Charter members of the church were Rev. and Mrs. (Mattie Lou) John Cox, Martha, Laura, Betty and Jeanette Cox, Charlie and Emma Burkett, Tom and Mary Burkett, Mr. and Mrs.
William Kennedy, and Jess and Bessie Burkett.
Men who have served as pastors of the church over the history of the church are John J. Cox, C. R. Bailey, Cooper Locke, Perry Laten, Joel Montgomery, Jerry Bryant, Brady Blalock, Doil Moore,

Mountain View Baptist Church has truly been greatly blessed by the Lord over the years, and growth is a marvelous blessing from the Lord. Mountain View has been recognized by the Georgia Baptist Convention as one of the steadiest growing churches in Georgia. We currently draw membership from not only Upson County, but Pike, Meriwether, Lamar, and Spalding
Counties as well. Total membership in the church today is over 900, but we like to be affectionately referred to as "the largest small church in Upson County" because we do try to treat everyone personally and as a part of our family..
